This paper examines the economic logic of integrated assessment — balancing the costs against the benefits of greenhouse gas abatement. Stylized facts are employed in a multiregion computable general equilibrium model with a public good. The percentage shares of global emissions are determined outside the model — based upon some form of international agreement — and emission rights are tradeable between regions. The analysis is confined to Pareto-optimal (cooperative) solutions. We focus on the sensitivity of initial decisions to low-probability, high-consequence scenarios associated with cumulative emissions. For simplicity, there are only two regions, two tradeable goods, two time periods, and two states-of-world. With the particular form of public good model adopted here (production rather than utility function impacts), it turns out that a Pareto-optimal hedging strategy is indepedent of the emission shares allocated to each region. Equity issues may be separated from those of economic efficiency. Similar results extend to cases in which there are additional regions, tradeable goods, time periods, and states-of-world.Presented at the Conference on the Economics of Global Environmental Change, Birmingham University, May 9–11, 1994. This paper considers the prescribed scalar curvature problem onS n forn>-3. We consider the limits of solutions of the regularization obtained by decreasing the critical exponent. We characterize those subcritical solutions which blow up at the least possible energy level, determining the points at which they can concentrate, and their Morse indices. We then show that forn=3 this is the only blow up which can occur for solutions. We use this in combination with the Morse inequalities for the subcritical problem to obtain a general existence theorem for the prescribed scalar curvature problem onS 3.This article was processed by the author using the style filepljourlm from Springer-Verlag.  相似文献

The effects of three-dimensionality on the turbulence producing near-wall structures over a rotating disk are examined using hydrogen bubble visualization. Laser Doppler anemometry measurements of the tangential and radial velocities indicate the flow to resemble that of an infinite disk. It was found that the crossflow acts to reduce vertical mixing during the turbulence ejection events, thus reducing the efficiency of the boundary layer in producing shear stress. This research has been sponsored by the Department of Energy Office of Basic Energy Sciences through Grants DE-FG03-86ER13608 and DE-FG03-93ER12309.  相似文献

A beam of relativistic antihydrogen atoms — the bound state ( e+) — can be created by circulating the beam of an antiproton storage ring through an internal gas target. An antiproton which passes through the Coulomb field of a nucleus will create e+e pairs, and antihydrogen will form when a positron is created in a bound instead of continuum state about the antiproton. The cross section for this process is roughly 3Z 2 pb for antiproton momenta about 6 GeV/c. A sample of 600 antihydrogen atoms in a low-emittance, neutral beam will be made in 1995 as an accidental byproduct of Fermilab experiment E760. We describe a simple experiment, Fermilab Proposal P862, which can detect this beam, and outline how a sample of a few-104 atoms can be used to measure the antihydrogen Lamb shift to 1 %. We describe the properties of a series of oligomeric polyfluorophores assembled on the DNA backbone. The 11 oligomers (oligodeoxyfluorosides, ODFs), 4-7 monomers in length, were composed of only two fluorescent monomers and a spacer in varied sequences, and were designed to test how fluorescent nucleobases can interact electronically to yield complexity in fluorescence emission. The monomer fluorophores were deoxyribosides of pyrene and perylene, which emit light in violet and blue wavelengths, respectively. The experiments show that simple variation in sequence and spacing can dramatically change fluorescence, yielding emission maxima ranging from 380 to 557 nm and visible colors from violet to orange-red. Fluorescence lifetime data, excitation spectra, and absorption data point to a number of multi-fluorophore electronic interactions, including pyrene-pyrene and perylene-perylene excimers, pyrene-perylene exciplexes, as well as monomer dye emissions, contributing to the final spectral outcomes. Thus, two simple fluorophores can be readily combined to give emissions over much of the visible spectrum, all requiring only a single excitation. The results demonstrate that fluorescent nucleobases in oligomeric form can act cooperatively as electronic units, and that fluorophore sequence in such oligomers is as important as fluorophore composition in determining fluorescence properties.  相似文献

Dynamic capillary electrophoresis (DCE) and direct calculation of the rate constants of isomerization has been applied to determine the cis-trans isomerization barriers of the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor captopril. The separation of the rotational cis-trans isomeric drug has been performed in an aqueous 50 mM borate buffer at pH 9.3. Interconversion profiles featuring plateau formation, peak-broadening, and peak coalescence were observed. To determine the rate constants of the forward and backward reaction (k(cis-->trans) and k(trans-->cis)) of the isomerization process in dynamic capillary electrophoresis, a novel straightforward calculation method using the experimental parameters plateau height, h(plateau), peak width at half height w(h), the total migration times of the cis-trans isomers t(R) and the electroosmotic break-through time t(0) as well as the peak ratio of the cis-trans isomers is presented for the first time. From temperature dependent measurements the rate constants k(cis-->trans) and k(trans-->cis) and the kinetic activation parameters DeltaG( not equal), DeltaH( not equal), and DeltaS( not equal) of the cis-trans isomerization of captopril were obtained. From the activation parameters the isomerization barriers of captopril at 37 degrees C under basic conditions were calculated to be DeltaG( not equal) (cis-->trans) = 90.3 kJ.mol(-1)and DeltaG( not equal) (trans-->cis) = 90.0 kJ.mol(-1*).  相似文献

We present an adaptive time stepping scheme based on the extrapolative method of Barth and Schlick [LN, J. Chem. Phys. 109, 1633 (1998)] to numerically integrate the Langevin equation with a molecular-dynamics potential. This approach allows us to use (on average) a time step for the strong nonbonded force integration corresponding to half the period of the fastest bond oscillation, without compromising the slow degrees of freedom in the problem. We show with simple examples how the dynamic step size stabilizes integration operators, and discuss some of the limitations of such stability. The method introduced uses a slightly more accurate inner integrator than LN to accommodate the larger steps. The adaptive time step approach reproduces temporal features of the bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor (BPTI) test system (similar to the one used in the original introduction of LN) compared to short-time integrators, but with energies that are shifted with respect to both LN, and traditional stochastic versions of Verlet. Although the introduction of longer steps has the effect of systematically heating the bonded components of the potential, the temporal fluctuations of the slow degrees of freedom are reproduced accurately. The purpose of this paper is to display a mechanism by which the resonance traditionally associated with using time steps corresponding to half the period of oscillations in molecular dynamics can be avoided. This has theoretical utility in terms of designing numerical integration schemes--the key point is that by factoring a propagator so that time steps are not constant one can recover stability with an overall (average) time step at a resonance frequency. There are, of course, limitations to this approach associated with the complicated, nonlinear nature of the molecular-dynamics (MD) potential (i.e., it is not as straightforward as the linear test problem we use to motivate the method). While the basic notion remains in the full Newtonian problem, it is easier to see the effects when damping is considered to be physical--that is, we do not view our method as a perturbation of Newtonian dynamics, we associate the damping with the environment, for example, a water bath (with gamma approximately 90 ps(-1)) [Zagrovic and Pande, J. Comp. Chem. 24, 1432 (2003)]. All stochastic approaches to MD are stabilized by large physical damping, but here, we are really using it only to show that the resonance frequency can be obtained. Another simplifying assumption used in this paper is "heavy" hydrogen (we take the hydrogen mass to be 10 amu)--the view here is that we are interested primarily in the slowest degrees of freedom, and this approach has effects similar to bond freezing and united atom treatments of hydrogen. So from the point of view of biomolecular applications, the method described here is best suited to studies in which water is not explicit (so that damping in the problem can really be viewed as environmental interaction), and the interest is in slow dynamics where the effects of hydrogen are neglectable. There are a number of parameters in the LN method and the one derived here, and we cannot in a short paper address all adjustments, so our primary goal as a first pass is to show that stability can be recovered for a set of numerically forced (and hence artificial) bond oscillations, and compare stability to fixed-step methods.  相似文献
